According to Greek mythology, Acheron was the river where the "psychopomp" Hermes delivered the souls of the dead to Charon, in order to end up in Hades. Each soul, passing by Charon's ferry, had to give an obolus for transport.. This enchanting river crosses three counties. Ioannina, Preveza and Thesprotia. Its name, most likely, comes from the word "achos", meaning "sorrow" and means "the river of sorrow". From a long time ago, the natural beauty in the springs of Acheron attracted many tourists. The trees around the springs and the crystal clear (and completely icy) waters of the river pull like a magnet both nature lovers and lovers of extreme sports.
Just a seven-minute drive away is the wonderful beach of Plataria, while with Petrina as your base, you can explore sites of unsurpassed beauty, such as the springs of Acherontas, the traditional village of Margariti, the imposing Parga and the magnificent Sivota.
